In 2023, kitchen trends have changed and are more fascinating than ever. During Salone del Mobile, high-end Italian firms debuted curved and asymmetrical islands, while our favorite interior designers are employing ever-more sumptuous, thoughtful, and intriguing materials.
Thanks to a renewed emphasis on natural materials, colors drawn from nature, like sage green, and subtle design elements that enrich your time in the area, the new kitchen trends are made to create more calming and pleasant places that will withstand the test of time. This is a pretty seismic shift in terms of interior design trends, putting the heart of the house at the center. According to interior designer Joy Moyler, “Kitchens will feel like another extension of the home, in that they will feel like a room, an additional living space within the house rather than a utilitarian location to prepare food in. As the emphasis shifts away from pure function, “more refined materials, art, and antiques will move into the area.”

SPIRAL ISLANDS
Why must a kitchen island’s corners be sharp? Of course not, is the response. And designers are realizing that rounded edges are more sociable and more conducive to gathering with friends and family in a modern kitchen. Five curved components from Cesar’s new Tangram kitchen series may be coupled with straight pieces to create a variety of shaped islands. This entire circular island end concept will be implemented throughout the year in family settings.
HIDDEN PANTRIES
It was a modern, monochromatic room with smooth surfaces and handle-free doors. Then, with the touch of a button, a pair of shelves, two rows that had been flush to the quartzite countertop, housing jars of spices and other favored ingredients, appeared out of the center of the kitchen island.
Having their most-used tastes within such close reach feels like a sensible solution for the ardent home cook, yet it doesn’t compromise the space’s minimalism in any way. It’s challenging to be truly inventive in a commonplace setting like the kitchen, where you can assume that every concept has already been explored, but here, I felt as if I was discovering something entirely new.
SWOOPING, LARGE HANDLES
Luxurious kitchen and bathroom brand Scavolini debuted the new Jeometrica collection to the public in June, which was another of the brand-new designs I saw make their premiere at Salone del Mobile.
It felt like an eye-catching approach to add some design sensibility to a minimal area with its sweeping handles that traverse the modern kitchen cabinets. Yet, this is much more than just looks; I had to touch them and attempt to open the door for myself, of course.
The handles were at an angle, which made them simple and enjoyable to hold. With my hands full, I could see myself going back to the fridge and being able to grab the door either vertically or horizontally, depending on which finger was free.
A NEUTRAL SPACE WITH COLORFUL TAPES
We naturally gravitate towards minimalist color schemes as we seek to make our homes feel increasingly more calming, and grey kitchens once again take center stage. The addition of a jewel-bright tone on the faucet gives the room the burst of vitality it needs, and this style wouldn’t be Livingetc-approved without a little twist.
MDF panels, a unique kitchen material, are designed by the geniuses at Crosby Studios in New York to mimic the appearance and feel of powder-coated steel for the light cabinets. This a reminder that trends in kitchen faucets exist and that even the most common materials may be improved with the proper finish.
SMOOTH WOOD AND AGED BRASS
But, this kitchen designed by Roundhouse goes a step further and contrasts both the island and wall cupboards with the surface. The most recent countertop trends have seen a variety of colors and materials. The contrast of aged brass and wood in this room is especially intriguing, and I’m seeing it a lot from high-end designers right now. Because the wood is smooth and whorl-free and contrasts the industrial look of the brass, which has a deep, rich patina, this helps create transitional-style kitchens. The result is a kitchen with a half waterfall countertop that is both minimally appealing and visually intriguing.
VERY BIG FRIDGES
With more room to keep food for the entire family and fewer trips to the shop, super-size refrigerators are increasingly common in modern kitchen designs. This is part of a broader trend towards making the kitchen handier – see the advancements in smart kitchens – and a recognition by designers of how technology can be more subtly and effectively incorporated into the room.
PORCELAIN COUNTERTOPS
While quartzite, marble, and granite have traditionally been the most popular materials for kitchen countertops, new developments have seen porcelain enter the picture. It makes sense since, as a material, it is tough, long-lasting, and—perhaps most importantly—quite lovely to look at. According to Mor Krisher, head of design at Caesarstone, “Porcelain is non-porous, scratch, and stain resistant,” and “Our range comprises over 80+ colors in a wide assortment of colors, textures, and patterns.”
