DIY Air Fresheners: Freshening Up Your Home with Natural Scents

A slice of handmade apple pie or a bouquet of freshly picked flowers on the kitchen table are both welcome smells in my home. However, foul odors such as rubbish, burnt popcorn, and others can also fill the house. To rid the air of lingering, disagreeable odors, use a natural air freshener.

The Pomander Balls

Pomander balls are something I give as gifts over the holidays, but they’re more than just a sweet handcrafted gesture. Simply pierce citrus fruits with a handful of cloves and roll the finished product in a spice or two, such as cinnamon and ground nutmeg, to make the all-natural air fresheners. Hang pomander balls in a closet to keep stale air and odors at bay.

Aromatherapy Oils

Natural deodorizers include essential oils. Aside from filling a diffuser with your favorite aroma to freshen up your home, there are other places where the sweet-smelling oils might help. You can use these to eliminate the stinking trash can odor. To create a fresher, the more appealing aroma in your vehicle, cover a wooden clothespin with a few drops of essential oils and clip it to the automobile air vent. Did you know that you can also cook using essential oils?

Baking Powder

It’s difficult to keep track of all the different ways to clean using baking soda. It’s also great for disguising odors. In a tiny spray bottle, combine 1 tablespoon baking soda and 1 tablespoon water to make a baking soda air freshener spray. Although baking soda does not have a perfume-like smell, it will absorb undesirable odors and eliminate them.

Coffee

There’s no denying the benefits of daily coffee consumption, whether you brew your own or visit a local haunt (here are the top coffee shops in every state). Coffee, in addition to providing us with a daily energy boost, also serves as a natural homemade air freshener. If a room is particularly stinky, scatter bowls of freshly ground coffee throughout the area—be careful to arrange the bowls strategically, such as on top of a floor vent, so that the aroma spreads more quickly throughout the space. The scent of the coffee grounds will mask any unpleasant odors.

Vinegar

Few things are more unpleasant than the odor of a bathroom-related incident, or any other similar lavatory odor. Vinegar is a powerful liquid that not only eliminates unpleasant odors but also keeps the air as clean as possible. Place vinegar in a cup or bowl and leave it in the contaminated area for a few hours. The acetic acid will disinfect the air and kill microorganisms while removing any bad odors that try to linger.

Houseplants with Fragrant Aromas

Maintaining fresh flowers in each room will undoubtedly bring a lovely smell to your home. However, those weekly flowers can add up. Use scented home plants like jasmine or lavender for a less expensive choice. Grow a variety of herbs in the kitchen, such as mint or rosemary, to keep odors at bay. These are the greatest kitchen herbs to plant.

Natural Candles

Candles have two functions: they absorb odors and provide a warm, pleasant glow in your space. Look for natural varieties scented with essential oils and manufactured with bees, coconut, or soy wax.

Aromatherapy Diffuser

Diffusing essential oils, many of which contain antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral qualities, can not only freshen but also purify the air.

1 Simply bring a pot of water to a boil, then remove it from the heat and add a few drops of essential oil, such as lemon or eucalyptus. The aroma of the oils will permeate the entire space. Consider purchasing a candle, electric, vehicle, or light ring diffuser.

Herbal Bouquets in Season

Place freshly cut herbs, such as geranium, peppermint, rosemary, and lavender, in tied bouquets or small bud vases to add a herbaceous smell to any area. They look especially nice in odd-numbered groups (e.g., three or five) on a dining room table.
