Using Wallpaper to Decorate Your Child's Room

We often associate the background image with the official home areas, such as the dining room or the front porch. But these days, beautiful patterns, colors, and textures are used to enhance any room in the home – and children’s rooms are my personal favorite. Not only is the wallpaper playable, beautiful or cool, but it can also be used to customize your children’s bedrooms and incorporate their ingenuity. Learn five ways you can use the background image to make the children’s rooms feel real.

Another great way to make a child happy is to decorate his room with something he enjoys. Whether it is robots or butterflies, there is a background image that will speak to your child. I recommend that you fully participate with your child in the selection process. A strong opinion about entertainment or interest may translate into a strong idea about a background image.

Clean the whole room, or use it to emphasize one place. Either way, you can use a special wall treatment to reflect your child’s personality and preferences.

Expert Tip: If an amazing pattern sounds above the walls, you can use a subtle design to highlight your child’s desired madness. Black and white paper can make the colors appear on the wall and create more drama and interest in the room. Here, the black and white paper serves as a sophisticated background for bright, colorful swing boards. As a bonus, these background images can grow in a way that is consistent with your child’s age, making it a budget-friendly option.

There is no shortage of options when it comes to the background image. If your child is large in geometric shapes such as triangles and stars, think of the many toys that combine these shapes to create beautiful invisible patterns. Using repetition of a large single-dimensional scale like this star background can make a striking statement, but it still leaves room for breath to be emphasized by color pops throughout the room. If there is one thing I have learned as a mother that the baby’s favorite color goes up with the favorite ice cream. Celebrate color preferences and your child’s bedroom will feel theirs right away.

If your child is not set in the same color or shape, do not be afraid to combine it! Various shapes and color schemes can be combined in interesting ways. In this room, for example, thick lines painted on the ceiling in green, yellow, and white contrast with the background pattern with a small amount of black and white moon. Bold pairing results in playfulness, and a different look.

Using wallpaper on the ceiling is also a smart way to present drama and personality in a room. One Caveat: When considering placing paper on the ceiling, remember that you are working at a high altitude and against gravity. The roof is usually well lit, illuminating all imperfections. If you are not a confident DIYer, I recommend that you hire a professional paper hanger.

Expert Tip: If you do not paint the walls, using colorful wallpaper and favorite shapes for your child can be a great way to wear regular places and nooks, such as the back of book boxes.

A photo frame from Graham & Brown, designed by artists Taylor and Wood, makes a great background for hanging your child’s artwork and entices your child to paint directly inside the frames. Alternatively, use paper as a background for wall-mounting family photos. Artwork and photographs can be rearranged on this black and white paper, giving the room a lot of flexibility in the look and feel. It can also be cleaned with a sponge, making it easy to erase mistakes!

Another option is Pop & Lolli’s color wallpaper, which is a removable and reusable wallpaper that works as a coloring book. When everything is colored, just remove the paper and paste it on another sheet.

Expert Tip: If you are an artist in the family, you can create your custom wallcovering that works as a colorful wall. Ask a talented family member or friend to scan their line art with high resolution and send it to a digital printer that specializes in wall coverings. Easy-to-remove paper and stick are not suitable for this application.

Digital printing has transformed the world of wallpaper by providing more cost-effective alternatives than expensive hand-crafted wallpaper. Almost any design or image can now be translated into a wallpaper – including your child’s artwork!

I recently decorated my son’s entire room using one of his original paintings. He was only 3 years old at the time and was just learning to hold a paint brush. I worked with Digital Printing Specialties outside of Detroit to create a duplicate pattern using a small part of my son’s drawing. In this image, you can see both the actual drawing (the frame) and the background image we created based on it.

We did not use this repetition to print wallpaper, but we also created fabric for drapes, bedding, and decorative cushions. The result is a truly unique room lined with brushstroke repetition that celebrates an immature piece of my child’s artwork.

Expert Tip: Digital printers can print on a wide range of paper, including hard paper and stick paper. Discuss all your options with the child.
